MY EXPERIENCE AS AN EDUCATOR
At Insight Walk, we are on a mission to create an education model where community members and children create their learning trajectory. Simply stating they decide what a child should learn and not we!
Here’s what we have achieved in the past five years of our work:
- Running an all women’s fellowship where women from the same community mentor and teach children.
- Designed curiosity led learning spaces where children from the mixed aged group learn and experiment together. Infact they decide the skills and subjects they want to learn every month.
- Children learn by problem solving. They choose the problems faced by locals and come together as a team to find low cost, locally scalable solutions. They often involve women, their parents and grand parents too in this process. (Check below examples to know more about this)
My three years stint at Teach For India helped me build an in-depth understanding of educational landscape – the challenges, as well as the scope for innovation.
It left me with the following thoughts to ponder upon:
- We need to look at a child’s potential beyond academic data. Children are much more than their assessment scores.
- Student learning starts with great teachers – but doesn’t end there.
- Students should have a choice to choose their learning. Skills shouldn’t be just restricted to extra curricular activities.
- Students need to look at their community members as role models too. Or in other words, local community should step up in the education process and lead from front.
