Overcome Self Limiting Thoughts Step By Step

Do you tell yourself you want to change, but you didn’t take action because you’re scared? Or you want to participate in your team meeting but you hold yourself for fear of being judged?

Let’s understand your self limiting thoughts and cultivate empowering thoughts step by step.

Changing what you believe about yourself is the prerequisite to every other change you seek.

Step 1: Make a list of your self limiting thoughts. Some are mentioned below.

  • I won’t make enough money
  • I will never be successful
  • One day I’ll start
  • I don’t have time
  • No-one will support me
  • I don’t have experience
  • People won’t like it
  • I am a failure
  • I don’t have the proper degree
  • I am not ready
  • Why will people buy from me?
  • I don’t have enough money
  • I don’t have a team
  • I tried but I failed. So I know it won’t work
  • People will judge me

Step 2: 6 Questions to identify underlying reasons and turn them into empowering thoughts.

  • What would I do with my life if I no longer had this limiting belief?
  • What is the result I fear most tied to this limiting belief?
  • What was I told I couldn’t / shouldn’t do as a child?
  • What are the excuses that I give myself while thinking of these limiting thoughts? (excuses that hold you in your comfort zone)
  • If I change this limiting belief into an empowering belief, what will change in my life?
  • What small steps can I take today and this week that will help me build my self-esteem?

Journal these thoughts consistently two to three times every week for at least 6 weeks.

Step 3: Put your limiting belief on hold

  • Write down 2-3 limiting beliefs on a paper and seal it in an envelope for a week.
  • Also, on a different paper write down an empowering belief for each of your limiting beliefs and put it on your desk/wall.
  • For eg: A limiting belief would be: I don’t have time for exercise | An empowering belief would be I deserve to be fit and I can give myself 20 minutes every morning.
  • Can you put your limiting belief on hold for a week and instead try living with your empowering belief?
  • Open the sealed envelope after a week and write down your reflections.
